It was shortly after Art For Grabs in August that I received a phone call from Puan Rozi on behalf of the National Cancer Society Malaysia to install 'Fruit in Kind' for their overnight charity run for cancer awareness, 'Relay for Life 2014'. How do I say 'no' to doing something in support of cancer awareness and fund-raising? It was my honour and pleasure to take part. This time, the Society supplied ALL of the fruits to be arranged on the day, and all I had to do was come and setup the installation. And I was well provided with Many event volunteers who helped me setup the installation. So I am very thankful to Joanne, Ewen, Nicholas, Chris, Bao Qi, Yu Anne, Li-Yan and Puan Rozi for all their help in setting up the installation. Ruby also stopped by later with Fatin in tow, to offer support, and eventually inevitable help. :) The Society did request however, that the fruits on display this time be sold to event visitors, and that the proceeds would go to cancer-related charity. How could I but oblige modifying the concept of the artwork in the cause of helping to raise awareness and fight cancer, however I believe this was and will be the only time I will ever allow 'Fruit in Kind' to be modified in it's concept or process. The event was an overnight activity, so there was a sea of small, multi-coloured camping tents right next to the running circuit, where people were either making walking vigils, or doing light running (due to the rain making everything slippery.) The circuit was lined with beautiful paper bag lamps which were made in memory of those either fighting cancer, or taken by it. I've never lost anyone I know to cancer, and I hope I may never know what it feels like, but it was touching to be in the presence of such a strongly palpable atmosphere of supportive human communion. Overall things were kept pretty festive, spirited and positive, because there were a lot of really good food stalls and a music stage by the entrance, with really loud bands playing all night through. In the end, many fruits were sold, and the remaining fruits were donated to the Radiology sector of Prince Court Medical Centre. |
