Monday, 23 March 2015 Having a Fruit in Kind Project Team is awesome because Ruby and Fatin are awesome people to share the project with. We met up at the Pasar Pudu really early in the morning and then bought as much fruit as the leftover donation money from FIK@George Town could get us. Unfortunately Ruby and Fatin couldn't join me this time to visit Bangsa Ria, because it was a working day, but hopefully next time. When we buy fruit for Bangsa Ria, we make sure to buy fruits that are either easy for the caretakers to prepare, or that are seedless. Bangsa Ria is a home for disabled and mentally challenged individuals, so the kids at Bangsa Ria aren't really able discern when it comes to seeds, and will try to swallow them whole, even large seeds, which is a choking hazard. Bangsa Ria had to relocate last year because their neighbours objected to the presence of mentally disabled people in the vicinity, and pressured them to leave. Apparently the same problem is faced again at the centre's new location. Their new neighbours have lodged official complaints to pressure Bangsa Ria to leave, citing reasons based in ignorance. 'Normal' people can be unbelievably retarded sometimes. |
