Half of the boxes were full by the afternoon! And we have not even started buying them from the markets yet! Do you guys smell that? Generosity and compassion!! There was a big amount of oranges and apples, indicating that Malaysians are still in our Chinese New Year mood. The caretaker of the Hin Bus, Abang Mahidy is officially the coolest person I know in Penang! He has been so helpful to us, from finding plastic bags to keep our fruits to the lightings to everything else. Without his assistance and the rest of the Hin Bus staffs, Shu Ruei and I would be lost puppies the entire time, knowing not how things work around here. The opening was at 8.00 pm and the FIK display received great attention from the visitors. Why would it not? It’s colourful, quite large and has many types of fruits arranged in red boxes! It is, perhaps, the brightest piece of the exhibition. No kidding! The visitors walked around it, asking questions as either to the name of the fruits (some of them even I had never seen before, haha!), the inspiration behind the piece or the process of receiving and distributing donations. As I explained this kind of information to the visitors, it deepens the meaning of FIK for me – it involves not only one or two person running the project as it intertwines the lives of many from the donors, the families who will receive the fruits and the gracious individuals who have devoted their times to help us in between the processes. |
