Hello Again! We’re going to run Fruit in Kind for the 5th time in Georgetown, Penang! Very excited I have to say... :) This time, Fruit in Kind will be hosted by the new Hin Bus Depot Art Centre (affectionately called ‘Hin’) as part of a female group exhibition called ‘Mercury’. The show will run from 21st February till 22nd March 2015, however ‘Fruit in Kind’ will only be conducted for 2 weekends during this period. With the help of the Penang Stop Human Trafficking Campaign (PSHTC) campaign, 4 days worth of collected fruit will be donated to families from Rohingya refugee communities in Seberang Perai, Penang. The Rohingya are a Muslim group in Myanmar who have been written out of citizenship and subject to constant and horrific harassment in their homeland, including killings, rape, beatings, torture, forced labour, abductions and extortion. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee, and some 50,000 refugees are currently in Malaysia, including in Penang. Their lives here are also precarious. The Fruit in Kind project will continue to cement community interaction and solidarity, not least for those 30+ refugee families who help run and support the first Rohingya kindergarten in the area. These 30+ families will be the ones receiving your fruit donations. To learn more about PSHT, please click here. The fruit collected on the 5th day of Fruit in Kind will be donated to the students of SK Tan Sri P.Ramlee, Pulau Pinang. This small school is attended by 250 children from underprivileged backgrounds, and it happens to be neighbours with Hin Bus. So when they’re right next door, then we're going to try to help them too. I would like to thank everyone at Hin Bus so very much for their enthusiastic and total support of ‘Fruit in Kind’. They totally grasped what ‘Fruit in Kind’ is all about, and I am so amazed by the lengths they’ve gone to help arrange it. I would also like to thank Penang Stop Human Trafficking, and Puan Normala, the principal of SK P. Ramlee, for being so open and supportive, when we approached them with this project. Fruit in Kind will be running on the following dates. If you would like to make a walk-in donation, please bring your fruit along! (To Hin Bus, which is at 31a, Jalan Gurdwara, Georgetown, by the way..!) Fruit in Kind collecting hours will be from 12noon till 5pm. 21 & 22 Feb 27, 28 Feb & 1 Mar We hope to see you there! :D |
