We were so chuffed to find out from Penang Stop Human Trafficking that over the course of 2 days collecting fruit, Fruit in Kind managed to gather enough fruit for 26 of the 30 Rohingya families involved in this project. This is only possible because the Penangite community have been so enthusiastically supportive by coming to give fruit, and also because of the complete support and sharp thinking of the Hin Bus staff and PSHTC. There are thousands of Rohingya refugees in Penang, however for this project we decided to focus on the 35 children who attend the refugee kindergarten, and their families. As refugees, these children are not allowed to attend local Malaysian kindergartens. So PSHTC has set up a special 'informal' kindergarten for the children to receive a basic education. This kindergarten is an improvised shop house space, with enough room for 2 classrooms, and teachers who come in to teach on a volunteer basis. The conditions in the kindergarten are extremely basic. If you would like to help these children beyond just giving fruit, the kindergarten would be so glad for volunteer teachers, monetary donations, and also in-kind donations of school supplies like pencils, colour pencils, exercise books, and toys for children of kindergarten age. To start helping, please call Kim of PSHTC at 017 418 4819. If you missed the chance to give fruit last weekend, but would still like to give fruit, Fruit in Kind will be running again at Hin Bus Depot Art Centre for another weekend on 27 & 28 Feb and 1 March 2015. We would love for all the 30 families to get their share of fruit, and you can help make that happen by coming by Jalan Gurdwara with some fruit! :) |
